UK Trade and Investment has produced a report examining opportunities for UK engineering companies in South East Asia, covering Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Consumption of machine tools in this market is US$1.6 billion per annum. This huge market encompasses a wide range of equipment. According to the report, the best immediate opportunity lies in niche markets such as metrology.
“The UK has a niche which is not reflected elsewhere,” the report claims. “There are a reasonably large number of suppliers in the metrology market. The majority of those are small owner-managed SMEs.There are two noticeable
exceptions, Renishaw and Taylor Hobson. Bowers Metrology are also fairly big. But the vast majority of suppliers of metrology are SME’s employing between 15 and 50 people.”
The report notes the UK’s talent for mid-production and end-of-production metrology - and this can be regarded as a competitive advantage.
Business development in metrology offers good prospects, especially if targeted at a relatively small number of potential customers that operate at a higher level of technology relative to competition in the markets they serve.
