The UK’s National Physical Laboratory’s has opened a new measurement services facility at the University of Huddersfield. This is the latest development in the collaboration between the NPL and the University, who signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2008. ”The MoU has worked really well,” said Dr Brian Bowsher, M.D of the NPL, “and its success is demonstrated by the new measuring services laboratory at Huddersfield.“
The NPL’s facility will provide services to manufacturing industry in the region, such as measurement of highly complex surfaces or the provision of laser-trace equipment for on-site calibration of large and complex machine tools.
The University of Huddersfield is home to the Centre for Precision Technologies, CPT, with its expertise in areas such as metrology, precision engineering and the calibration of machine tools.
One of the components of the CPT is the Engineering Control and Machine Performance Group (ECMPG), led by University’s Alan Myers, which was recently approached by a consortium of 11 organisations to join a new project funded by a European programme known as Framework 7. The aim of the research is to achieve massive improvements in machine tool accuracy.
