Advanced Engineering 2012 preview
Advanced Engineering  2012 being held at Birmingham, NEC, 7- 8th November, includes four shows: Aero Engineering, Composites, Automotive Engineering and Plastics Electronics.

With over 500 exhibitors, the Advanced Engineering 2012 group of  shows looks to exceed its record attendance of 7000+ visitors achieved in 2011. This year’s event  brings, under one giant roof in the NEC Birmingham Hall 1, four individually focused  and highly synergetic trade shows  targeted at key high value engineering & technology sectors – Aero Engineering, Composites Engineering , UK Plastic Electronics and, new for 2012, Automotive Engineering – the latter show providing a new supply chain commercial/technical exchange environment supporting the UK’s highly resurgent and dynamic vehicle engineering sector.

Supporting the 2012 exhibition floor,  are  some 140+ expert presentations, hosted in four show-floor-based open auditoriums. With dedicated programme sessions for Aero Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Composites Engineering  & Plastic Electronics, together with cross-sector ‘Advanced Engineering’ feature sessions. Ian Stone, the show organiser, says the 2012 programme is  the most ambitious to date.

Dedicated free-to-attend session themes this year include: Digital manufacturing, Quality Management & Inspection, Automotive Test & Development, BioComposites, Introduction to Plastic Electronics, Thermoplastic Materials,  SC21: 21st Century Supply Chains, Non Destructive Testing of Composites, Process & Capability Advances in Composites, Plastic Electronics in Industry, UK Low/Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles, Breaking into the Aero Supply Chain, Surface Engineering, Composites in Automotive, How to get started on Quality Initiatives – how to do AS9100 and NADCAP, Process & Capability Advances in Automotive Design / Manufacture…and more.

This year, there is an expanded Test, Measurement and Inspection Focus – supported by Chartered Quality Institute, BiNDT,  QMT magazine, and MIRA. with some some 100+ test related exhibitors across the interconnected show floor, together with a dedicated seam of related    technical presentations over the 2 days of the event

Renishaw will be exhibiting its range of advanced engineering technology products at Aero Engineering 2012. Visitors to hall 1 stand 707 will have the chance to see a range of Renishaw's products, including the Equator versatile gauge, and the AM250 laser melting machine.

Equator, says Renisahw, offers a radical alternative to traditional gauging systems, rapidly collecting thousands of data points which can then be used for the comparative measurement of high-volume manufactured parts. Replacing manual measurement with an automated Equator gauging system can greatly increase throughput and reduce scrap rates, at a fraction of the cost of an equivalent custom gauging system.

Renishaw's AM250 laser melting machine utilises a pioneering, additive manufacturing process capable of producing fully dense metal parts direct from 3D CAD, using a high-powered fibre laser. Parts are built from a range of fine metal powders that are fully melted in a tightly controlled atmosphere, in layer thicknesses ranging from 20 to 100 microns.

Visitors to Aero Engineering will also be able to see the QC20-W ballbar, which is the first calibration tool to allow testing of CNC machine tools in 3 orthogonal planes through a single reference point. A single, simple hardware set-up means quicker testing and the ability to produce a representative volumetric measurement of positioning accuracy, with the added convenience of wireless operation. AxiSet Check-Up is a complementary cost-effective tool for checking the alignment and positioning performance of rotary axes. In just a few minutes, users of five-axis machining centres and multi-tasking mill-turn machines can identify and report on poor machine alignments and geometry that can cause extended process setting times, as well as non-conforming parts.

Fischer Instrumentation (GB)
The ability to non-destructively measure thickness measurement coatings, to include those multi-layered, uneven or difficult to reach, with precision is critical to quality control standards in production, for incoming inspections or in the lab.  Such statistical monitoring of processes is now possible with a combination of Fischer GB’s handheld measuring devices and inspection plan software, allowing inspection plans to be created on the PC and then loaded onto the handheld measuring device. Step-by-step on-screen guidance then leads the operator through the acquisition procedure which can then be transferred back to the PC onto customisable reports.
Fischer Instrumentation (GB) will present the solutions now possible in the Test, Measurement and Inspection Open Forum at Advanced Engineering, 2012.  In addition, a full range of handheld measuring devices and probes for the automotive and aerospace industries will be on display on Stand 412, along with the new FISCHERSCOPE  XAN 250 XRF measuring instrument for coating thickness measurement and material analysis of automotive components.

UK-based coordinate measuring machine (CMM) manufacturer, Aberlink Innovative Metrology will be demonstrating the Axiom Too CMM at Advanced Engineering 2012. Available in a range of manual or CNC sizes, the advanced, easy to use CMM can  be operated by novice or experienced CMM operators. In addition to delivering consistent, precise results within inspection departments, the Axiom Too is capable of achieving the same precise measuring results when located on the shop floor.
Aberlink will show the new version IV of its 3D software for the first time in the UK. Used across Aberlink’s entire product range and globally by third party metrology companies, Aberlink’s intuitive, easy to use 3D software ensures greater operator productivity and profitability.

Also on display will be Aberlink’s Project X, optical measuring machine. Based on an Aberlink patented, absolute scale, X,Y and rotational positions are measured with great accuracy. Aberlink’s Project X has a large measuring capacity of 400 x 300mm, with 125mm of motorised Z-axis focus,.
